19.-THE CULINARY WORLD COMES TO PARIS!
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards give every year an opinion on the status of French cookbooks and wine books compared to other countries. This year 102 countries participated and the number of French winners progressed, taking France from the 4th place in 2008 to the second place in 2009. It seems the quality of French books is improving.
The Gourmand Awards took place this year in Paris, after London (2008), Beijing (2007), Kuala Lumpur (2006). So this year France was competing on their home ground. This Awards event was a glamorous show as always, this time at La Comédie Française, the theatre of Molière.
The quantity of culinary books published in France is very large, as in 2008. Some 1500 titles were published, more than half of the production of the United States, with a much smaller population for France. It is true that in the US a large quantity of cookbooks are published without ISBN, for fund raising and charity purposes.
1.-THE TROPHIES
The two most important Awards that France won in the competition give a clue to its success in the sector.
First, France won the first award for Best Book Trade Magazine in the World. Livres Hebdo is now recognized everywhere as the best. Its articles, surveys, even the design are copied worldwide. Only the German or Swedish Book Trade magazines can compare to the French weekly in the exhaustive coverage of the book business, including investigative reporting, opinions, sector surveys. Livres Hebdo leads the sector.
Second, small publisher Editions de lEpure won Best Cookbook Publisher in the World. Publisher Sabine Bucquet-Grenier has created a brand with a deep backlist with books that are as practical as beautiful. French cookbook publishing has a wide number of independent small publishers who can survive with ingenuity and creativity as well as big publishers who dominate sales. The only other French publishers to have won this award in the past are Larousse and Editions Alain Ducasse. At the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards this year, small publishers from all countries won two thirds of the awards. This fact backs the current assumption that small publishers are building for the future after the crisis, while big publishers are retreating trying to save their established positions.

(Farrar, Straus, Giroux)
The world of wine, for a Manhattan wine shop.
Most of the books are guides or travelogues on a few leading French regions:
Bordeaux and Champagne mostly, Alsace and Rhone sometimes, very few of the many others.
Some relate personal stories and experiences.
Tourism is a key factor in nearly all books.
CONCLUSION
France imports only 4% of the cookbook titles it reads, and nearly no wine books.
The French export a lower number of cookbook titles than their powerful culinary image would muster: the foreign rights business does ask for some reciprocity to work well so both sides win.
Most of the titles foreigners read about French food and wine are not written by French Authors but by foreigners. It is also true that writers of practical books write for the readers, and foreign writers understand the needs and expectations of foreign readers.

42.- SCOTLAND
THE AULD ALLIANCE IS ALIVE AND WELL IN PARIS!
Just as in football or rugby, Scotland has its own entries in the competition for the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

This year, a book from Scotland won Third Place against books from 28 other countries, in the most prestigious category of chef books.

Cooking with whisky: Discover how just one small dram of Scotch whisky can transform a good dish into one that is sublime.
The authors were the stars of the LBF/Gourmand Cookbook Corner at the London Book Fair in April 2009. Their show ended the busy days for publishers and authors. Cookbooks did better than most other books at the fair this year, and the stand was very crowded. The whisky kitchen had very interesting contacts for business.
Winning a Gourmand Award often deals, and unlocks the doors of big publishers. Authors need an agent or an award, or even better, both the impact of the Gourmand Awards is obvious at the events of the Gourmand Awards. There is much fun, but also much business.
This was the case this year at the Gourmand Awards event on July 1 at La Comédie Française, the theater of Molière. Before Paris, the event took place in London (2008), Beijing (2007), Kuala Lumpur (2006).
One of the dreams of Edouard Cointreau, the founder and president of the awards, is to go with the awards event to Edinburgh, the town of this grandmother.
